Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating, releasing restrictions, and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system.

The craniosacral system comprises the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

During CST sessions, the client is fully clothed.

Here’s how to tell you need Craniosacral Therapy:

Somato-Emotional Release

At Elysian Rose, we use the Somato-Emotional Release® manual therapy process developed by Dr. Upledger that expands on the core principles of Craniosacral Therapy to help rid the body of the residual effects of past trauma and negative emotional experiences. This process includes therapeutic dialogue, working with imagery and the unconscious mind to address underlying mental-emotional challenges that might be contributing to dis-ease. The goal is to facilitate a holistic mind-body approach to the resolution of problems and obstacles related to patient/client progress and growth.

“What does it mean to hold space for someone else? It means that we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they’re on without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome.”

“When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts, offer unconditional support, and let go of judgment and control.”

“Holding space is a key part of what we do in Upledger CranioSacral Therapy: being neutral, supporting the client’s intuition and inner wisdom, creating a safe space – rather than trying to fix, give advice, judge, or even to know.”

– Dr. John E. Upledger

Craniosacral Therapy FAQ

  • Clients receive treatments fully-clothed on a massage table. Clients often experience deep relaxation, a meditative state, or subtle physical sensations during the session due to the gentle, light touch, and energetic nature of the work. Sessions are highly customized based on where the client is in their health journey and what they’re experiencing in life when they arrive at their session. While much of the work is focused on the brain and spinal cord, craniosacral therapy is a full-body treatment that can address pain and tension in the connective tissue, resolve structural strain patterns and heal injuries, and alleviate unresolved somato-emotional patterns that may be contributing to holding patterns or resulting in dis-ease that’s showing up in the body.

  • Our owner has completed advanced training to support these populations. Please reach out to Elysian Rose for a complimentary consultation to discuss your unique needs. You can also book an appointment now and fill out our online intake forms. Every appointment includes detailed intake prior to treatments.

  • Yes, CST is extremely gentle, non-invasive, and safe for all ages. It is informed by an advanced understanding of anatomy and CST benefits are supported by clinical research. It’s important that your service provider demonstrate expertise and advanced training. Our owner has taken 7 craniosacral therapy intensive trainings, including 3 advanced trainings, with the esteemed and highly respected Upledger Institute, reflecting the gold standard of training.

  • Practitioner training is rooted in an understanding of physiological and psycho-emotional mechanisms of disease, as well as psychological concepts. These therapeutic frameworks draw from what Carl Jung called "active imagination," which is a way to bridge the gap between the non-conscious and the conscious. Along with imagery and conversation, active imagination can include dream work and art. This approach to Somato-Emotional Release also combines various Gestalt techniques from Fritz Perls and Roberto Assagioli's Psychosynthesis framework.

  • Craniosacral Practitioners observe what shifts are happening for a client during the session, and as appropriate, dialogue is introduced to work with the client’s unconscious holding patterns that may have emotional components. Creative and therapeutic imagery may be utilized to draw on the client’s own inner wisdom and higher self to assist with their own deeper, integrated healing process.

  • Many clients report feeling deep relaxation, clarity, and a sense of emotional balance. Some experience mild detox symptoms such as fatigue, increased elimination, or emotional release, which is a natural part of the healing process as your body unwinds and releases what no longer serves you.

  • This depends on your individual needs and goals. For acute issues, 3-5 sessions are recommended. For chronic issues or deep emotional work, a longer series of extended treatments is beneficial. We will discuss your progress after each session and customize your treatment plan accordingly.
